Extra Protection Against Cavities

Sealants are a highly effective way to help prevent tooth decay on molars and premolars, which are more prone to cavities due to their deep grooves and uneven surfaces.

Children often receive sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth come in, helping protect them during the years when cavities are most common. However, adults without decay or existing fillings in these areas can also benefit from this added layer of protection.

The process of applying sealants is quick and comfortable. The steps include:

• Thoroughly cleaning the teeth
• Drying the teeth
• Applying a protective liquid coating to the chewing surfaces
• Hardening the coating with a special curing light

Sealants create a barrier that helps protect enamel from plaque and acids. They can last for several years before needing to be reapplied. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface is better protected from decay.

Sealants are not a replacement for daily brushing and flossing. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and keeping up with regular dental cleanings is still essential. Since sealants do not protect between the teeth, flossing every day remains important.
